HOMESTEAD EXEMPTIONS

Homestead Exemption is available, upon request, to homeowners who reside and pay all local and state taxes in the taxing district. There are two types of Homestead Exemptions available:

  • Regular - allows up to $300.00 credit on a home with a $75,000 or more appraised value.
  • Special - is for residents who are 65 years of age before January 1 of each year or who are 100% disabled. This exempts up to $75,000 of the appraised value.
    • If you are a 100% service connected Disabled Veteran you would receive full credit for the total value of qualified property.

You may apply for Homestead Exemptions from January 2 through April 1 of each year. To apply you will need the following: Code 27-33-7, Code 27-33-31(1a)

  • filed warranty deed
  • cost of home(settlement statement)
  • all of your license tag numbers
  • Social Security numbers and dates of birth for grantees and their spouses

The deadline to file deed with Chancery Clerk to be eligible for homestead exemption is January 7th of each year. Code 27-33-17(f)


Homestead Note:

It is not necessary to reapply each year unless a change has occurred such as a death, divorce, married, or sale of a portion of the homesteaded property.

If filing as disabled, proof from the Veteran's Administration / Social Security must be presented.
